Workshop Night Presenter: Joseph Tam, APSEM, GMPSA, EFIAP/p
Topic: Entering International Competitions and Obtaining Photographic Honours

Joseph Tam took up digital photography with fervour ten years ago when he was seeking a post-retirement hobby.  His passion in photography ranges from sports and dynamic to travelling, street, photojournalism and landscape.  Joe started to participate in international photographic exhibitions from 2010 and is now an accomplished international exhibitor.

To date, he has been awarded over 12,500 acceptances and has won 1,620 awards from international exhibitions over 70 countries.  This includes 46 FIAP Blue Pins for “Best Author”; 600 gold/silver/bronze medals and 1,020 other awards.

On his photographic accreditations, Joe has obtained his top distinction of APSEM in 2016 from APS (Australia), GMPSA from PSA (USA) in 2016 and EFIAP/platinum from FIAP (Europe).

Joe has ranked in the top-10 positions of the PSA World Top-10 Exhibitors for four years in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Joe has been appointed by APS as a Verifying Officer to review both APS and FIAP distinctions applications.  He is a Star Ratings Director of the PSA Photo Travel Division approving Star applications and certificates to PSA members all over the world.

In 2017, PSA has approved over 400 exhibition applications received from numerous photographic societies to host exhibitions all over the world.  Apart from PSA, there are other approving international organisations like APS, FIAP, RPS, ICS and GPU.

After obtaining sufficient acceptances/awards from exhibitions, participants can apply for their photographic distinctions from the above international organisations. For example, PPSA requires 288 acceptances with 96 titles, no award is required.

In his presentation, Joe will talk through the what, how and when to enter international exhibitions and apply your photographic distinctions from various organisations.

Topics of the presentation will include:

  • Understanding the rules
  • How to formulate your strategy
  • Choosing which photos to enter
  • Recording your results
  • How to apply for distinctions

Most exhibitions will normally include sections such as digital colour or monochrome, photo travel, photojournalism, nature or prints.  Joe will use some of his award-winning photos to share his experience and to demonstrate on how to satisfy the requirements of various sections.
